Oscar De La Hoya says William Zepeda could face Tevin Farmer in a rematch before facing WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson if he defeats Floyd Schofield on February 22.
Shakur won't be happy when he hears Zepeda is having a rematch with Farmer. He was hoping to defend against the famous Mexican star next. Stevenson, a New Jersey native, needs a fight against Zepeda to generate interest in getting a unification bout against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.
Zepeda Farmer II?
No. 1-ranked 135-pound contender Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs) defeated Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) by 10-round split decision on November 16 in Riyadh. Making a rematch is a waste of time. Zepeda was clearly the better fighter and would have knocked out a very tired farmer if the contest was 12 rounds.
The Farmer's drive was empty by the ninth round as the fast pace and numerous body shots landed him Zepeda. The Mexican talent was throwing close to 100 punches per round and focusing a lot on the body.
It was impressive to see Farmer take all those shots, but at the end of the fight, he looked like he walked out of a war zone.
Farmer, a former IBF super featherweight champion, had his moments in the fight, scoring a quick knockdown of Zepeda in the fourth round. Zepeda came out strong to dominate Farmer, 34, in the second half of the fight, landing several energy-sapping body shots.
Interestingly, the judges seemed to ignore all of Zepeda's body shots on Farmer when he scored the fight, which should have been one-sided in Williams' favor. The scores were 95-94 for Williams, 95-94 for Zepeda, and 95-94 for Farmer.
“We have to wait because this is a real fight. Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield is a real fight, a dangerous fight for Shakur,” Oscar De Hoya said. Combat Center TV When asked if William Zepeda would fight Shakur Stevenson after his defense against Floyd Schofield on February 22.
“I have to go with my friend. I think my friend, Kid Austin, will get over the upset, and then we'll take it from there. William Zepeda, he'll fight him in the meantime.”
“There will probably be talks about a rematch with Tevin Farmer. “It was a good fight,” De La Hoya said of Zepeda’s 10-round split decision win over Farmer on Nov. 16 in Riyadh. “I think Tevin Farmer is a great fighter. I love the way he handles himself outside the ring. He's a good kid.
Farmer has taken a lot of punishment in his last two fights against Zepeda and Raymond Muratala. We probably won't see the same effort from him in his rematch with Zepeda. He's been beaten badly, and Zepeda is going to pour it on him from the get-go to get him out of there.
“So, yeah, it's about sitting down with Team Zepeda and coming up with a plan. But I'd love a rematch,” De La Hoya said of the rematch between Zepeda and Farmer.
