SEOUL (Reuters) – At least 28 people were killed on Sunday after a plane ran off the runway and crashed at South Korea's Muan International Airport, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The report stated that the accident occurred while the Jeju Air plane, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members on a flight coming from Thailand, was landing at the airport in the south of the country.
Yonhap reported that two people were found alive while the rescue mission was ongoing.
An airport official told Reuters that authorities were working to rescue people in the tail section.
Pictures published by local media showed smoke and flames enveloping parts of the plane.
Acting President Choe Sung-mok, who was appointed as the country's interim president on Friday after the previous acting president was removed amid an ongoing political crisis, has ordered a comprehensive rescue effort, his office said.
A Jeju Air spokesman said the airline was verifying the reports.
