(Reuters) – World leaders and American politicians reacted to news of the death of former US President Jimmy Carter, who as president mediated peace between Israel and Egypt and later won the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, at the age of 100.

He added: “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.

For six decades, we have been honored to call Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But what is extraordinary about Jimmy Carter is that millions of people across America and the world who have never met him consider him a dear friend, too.

“Jimmy's challenges as President have come at a pivotal time for our country and he has done everything he can to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”
