The Duchess's new eight-part series will premiere on January 15

It is the picture of domestic bliss.

The Duchess of Sussex picks flowers, chops vegetables and decorates cakes in a trailer Her new show is on Netflix.

There's also a scene in which she's harvesting honey and hugging her husband, Prince Harry.

Looks like Meghan has renamed herself. Her new look was described by PR expert Chloe Francis as resembling a “business wife”. Social media trendInspired by housewives of the 1950s.

In that sense, this is a departure for Meghan, who has been known as a feminist and actress in Hollywood.

But Frances says it's actually a return to Meghan's roots, where the duchess was a lifestyle blogger before her marriage to Harry.

As is always the case with Meghan, it became contentious. Francis praised it as “authentic”, while Alex Silver, a media relations expert, described it as “tone deaf”.

So what is the reason for her new TV show “With Love” and will it succeed?

“Harry and Meghan are separating their brands”

One of the most striking things about the trailer is that Meghan is alone, and not with Harry.

Since stepping down as senior royals in 2020 and moving to California, the couple have pursued various projects together, including setting up a production company and a charitable foundation.

But with this new show, it seems the couple increasingly wants to do their own thing professionally — and create two separate sources of income.

“They seem to have separated their brands,” says Pauline Maclaran, professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway.

“I think it's probably going to be more successful, because I think the two of them together haven't gotten any strong recognition.”

Stay away from proprietary relationships

The relaunch also marks a move away from royal life.

Since stepping down as senior royals, Harry and Meghan have continued to talk about the monarchy – including… In their interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 And Harry's book Spare Parts.

But in this new TV show, McLaren says Meghan “isn't relying on her royal connections” anymore.

Instead, it focuses on lifestyle and wellness – areas she had already explored before meeting Harry through her lifestyle blog The Tig.

On The Tig, Megan shares beauty, diet, and fashion tips, recipes, travel tips, and words of wisdom about love and life.

Tig closed in 2017, but public relations experts said returning to the lifestyle could be a smart move.

“This is a good path for a woman in the public eye who has a lifestyle that combines ambition and challenge,” says Frances.

Others are more skeptical.

“There are more interesting and important world events happening that you could talk about,” Silver says. “It could have been raising awareness for charity or something.

“I think all she cares about is herself. As a publicist, I can't understand how she can't read the room.”

And for others, experiments in the lifestyle world have backfired in the public eye.

Brooklyn Beckham's first photography book was… She was heavily mocked on social mediaFor example – with one photo of an elephant receiving particular ire.

“It's about her own business interests.”

This isn't Meghan's first foray into the world of business – an industry fraught with risks and rewards.

The pair's previous business initiatives include a multi-million pound deal with Netflix.

They appeared in another Netflix show called Harry & Meghan about their relationship. Both were also named as executive producers of the recent polo documentary, but it received low reviews from critics including The Guardian and The Telegraph.

Spotify's big bet on Meghan also failed.

In July 2023, the streaming giant and Sussex company Archewell Audio announced they had parted ways by mutual decision.

At the time, experts there suggested It wasn't a big enough audience for Megan's Archetypes podcast To justify its continuation.

Last March, it launched a different lifestyle brand called American Riviera Orchard. She currently has over 600,000 followers on Instagram, and boasts nine posts since her launch – but none since.

With this new venture, some have speculated that Meghan hopes to open up more business opportunities for herself, such as partnerships with supermarkets and major brands.

If so, she will follow the path of others such as Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow, through her hugely successful lifestyle platform Goop.

“This is clearly about her own business interests,” Silver says.

“They realize that their income will dry up at some point. Their lifestyles are very lavish, they are mixing in high-class circles, and they don’t want to become poor.”

Will it change the public's perception of her?

When it comes to the new TV show, royal expert Victoria Murphy says she “[doesn't]think there's any doubt that people will initially watch it and it will do well.”

But she says the real test is whether she consistently attracts a large following and actually builds a strong global brand outside the monarchy.

McLaren agrees, saying she thinks the show will resonate with certain groups of people, especially in the United States.

“A lot of the public won't care about that but I don't think that's her goal – I think she'll try to get other mothers really like her.”

For her part, Silver says Meghan may be hoping to “detoxify” her brand with the new show.

But she doesn't think the show will resonate with audiences.

“I can't imagine this would be something that would play well,” Silver says.

Perhaps the reaction to the trailer tells us all we need to know about how this latest project is likely to fail.

After his fall on Thursday, thousands of column inches were dedicated to him.

For example, the Daily Mail broke down every detail in every frame of the trailer, and most of it was unsympathetic.

The Duchess seems to receive never-ending attention – especially from the British tabloids. But she also has a core fan base on social media.

To her detractors, they will say this is glossy, superficial, and Hollywood at its worst.

But for her fans, they will say it's great to see her again, and it shows exactly what the royal family is missing.

In other words, this is likely to reinforce what people think about Meghan on both sides.
