The Women's Super League (WSL) has officially kicked off for the winter break after 10 action-packed sporting days so far.

After a strong start from the first minute, Chelsea expanded the gap at the top of the standings to six points. Injury-hit Manchester City trail the Blues by six points after a shock 2-1 loss to Everton in Round 10.

Arsenal have been making waves in recent weeks, having made up for their disappointing start to the 2024/25 season. The Gunners are unbeaten in 11 matches under the caretaker management of Rene Sligers, and are currently one point behind Manchester City.

Manchester United is still at the top of the standings, as it is located directly behind the Gunners on goal difference.

The tenth round of the match witnessed all the twists and turns, as Chelsea finally broke their winning streak at the hands of a stubborn Leicester City team at the King Power Stadium. Missy Goodwin's early opener put the Foxes on track for three points, before Vicky Kaptein was able to bring the score back level.

As for second-placed City, Everton beat coach Gareth Taylor's team at Walton Hall Park. Without some of their biggest stars, Manchester City had no answers to what was asked of them and wasted the opportunity to close the gap on Chelsea.

Arsenal took the opportunity to make up for lost time, as a 1-0 victory over Liverpool was enough to get the three points on Merseyside. The question is whether or not the Gunners have left the title race too late, but they are certainly in the running to leapfrog City in the standings.

Manchester United is also competing to qualify for the Champions League, but has shown that its weaknesses may keep it out of the title race completely.

Chelsea's fast start puts them in the driver's seat for the second half of the season, and with the quality of squad they have, it should be a smooth ride. Sonia Bombastor will welcome back Lauren James, Sam Kerr and Mia Fishel in the new year, something the opposition will be very excited about.

With both Arsenal and Manchester City also in the Champions League, the Blues will not have to worry about having to play more games than their Premier League counterparts.

As for the race for second place, we expect that Arsenal may snatch second place if it wants to maintain its current level. Taylor has shown his vulnerability when faced with adversity time and time again, and it looks as if this injury spate could reach the same conclusion.

City will need to regain their composure if they are to continue to put pressure on Chelsea at the top. Head coach Taylor has confirmed that City are “hoping to do some work” in the January transfer window in order to plug the holes created by the current injuries to Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp, Vivienne Miedema and Khadijah Shaw.

If Arsenal seal a deal for Rene Sligers until the end of the season, the north London side could have strong enough momentum to continue competing at a high level. January interest in Keira Walsh could also help bolster Arsenal's squad if they can conclude a deal for the England midfielder.
