The incident occurred on the third ball of the 66th over during India's first innings in the ongoing New Year's Test, with Washington Sundar left wincing in pain after a brutal delivery from Pat Cummins at the SCG on day one. Sundar tried to block the ball with his high hands, but the ball beat him on the inside edge and sent it straight into his penalty area.

The impact was immediate and extremely painful, resulting in Washington Sundar collapsing to the ground in pain, unable to recover from the painful blow. Team India's physiotherapist rushed onto the field to assess the damage as the Indian pacer struggled to get back on his feet after the nasty hit.
