Edgar Berlanga came out of the frame last night to call out super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco in his moment of glory following his win over Steven Nelson in Las Vegas. Berlanga posted on social media saying he wanted to give it away “Big payday.”
The callout from Brooklyn, Berlanga's original New York home, is redolent of flavor Chasing influencetrying to get some cheap publicity by challenging #1 WBO Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs) after his dominant performance against Nelson (20-1, 16 KOs) at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas last Saturday night.
Promoter Eddie Hearn says he would be open to a fight between Berlanga and Pacheco. However, he looked skeptical, as if he didn't think Edgar was serious about wanting to fight Diego. Herne is a wise owl who knows that the chance of a conflict between Berlanga and Pacheco is very slim.
Canelo effect
Berlanga's financial claims are likely to be very high following the large purse he received for his successful title win against unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Like many fighters facing Canelo, he's probably spoiled and wants to get the same result in his next fight. This won't happen.
Even if the Berlanga vs. Pacheco fight teases a rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico, the bout won't bring in PPV buys. It's not worth selling on pay-per-view, and it would take Turki Al-Sheikh to participate to pay the kind of money Berlanga would probably want.
There has been talk of Berlanga wanting to fight the 39-year-old Gabe Rosado Next in Puerto Rico to capitalize on his popularity in that country. He was treated like a champion after his loss to Canelo. Journeyman Rosado is located right down Berlanga Alley.
Berlanga was last seen losing to Canelo Alvarez via a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision on September 14 with these scores: 118-109, 117-110, and 118-109.
I'm gonna get this little boy a big payday and a big ass whoops ππ€πΌπ€πΌ You only get 200k in a fight sheesh πππππ
