Warren Gatland will remain as Wales coach for the 2025 Six Nations – but has been warned that results must improve with the team currently on a 12-game losing streak.

Wales' losing streak – the worst in their history – has left them without a Test win in 2024 and 11th in the world rankings, adding intense pressure to Gatland's position.

Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chief executive Abbey Tierney said a change of head coach was being considered after the organization carried out a review. After defeats to Fiji, Australia and South Africa in the Autumn Nations Series.

The New Zealander will remain for the time being, despite presiding over 12 defeats in 18 Tests since his second return in December 2022.

There was one departure, however, with Nigel Walker stepping down from his position as WRU Rugby Executive Director and saying: “It's right that I should be judged on performance on the field.”

The WRU will also appoint a High Performance Advisory Committee, including former senior players.

Tierney said of Gatland: “I've had a number of very honest conversations with Warren and I won't hide from the fact that his position was at stake as we carried out our review.”

Speaking during the Autumn Nations Series, Gatland said he had a desire to continue in his role as head coach but would consider stepping down.

“Furthermore, like any coach in any sport, he knows that the security of his position is directly linked to the performance of the team and that this situation will continue to worsen.

He added: “We have a difficult challenge ahead of us, but Warren is fully prepared to meet this challenge. We also believe that he is capable of doing so.”

During Wales' dismal autumn campaign, Sky Sports' James Cole assessed where things were going wrong for the team

The last time Gatland, whose contract runs until the 2027 World Cup finals, led Wales to the title was in October 2023 during the group stages of the World Cup in France.

“I've been very honest about welcoming scrutiny and challenge, as well as understanding the pressures of international rugby in terms of performance and results,” the 61-year-old said.

“I'm delighted to have the support of Abby and the board to take the team to the Six Nations.

“This group of players has a huge amount of potential and we will work incredibly hard together to improve our fortunes on the pitch.

“We know, more than ever, that we will be judged on competitiveness, success and wins during the 2025 campaign.

“During the review, I had the opportunity to explain my thinking, but I also appreciated the feedback and constructive challenge I was given.

“I would like to especially thank the players for their participation and honesty. I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.”

The FA added: “Adjustments to the current system will also be considered to assist Gatland immediately with the ambition of improving the mentality, mentality and culture within the squad through the introduction of additional personnel.

“Changes are planned ahead of the 2025 tournament and will include improved mentoring support for players using the new mental skills resources.”
