Stargazers around the world enjoyed a stunning celestial spectacle on Friday, as the planet Venus appeared to shine brightly above the crescent moon.
The planet was visible with the naked eye from the United Kingdom to the United States, Turkey and China.
Venus is often called the evening star or morning star because when it is prominent, it looks like the brightest “star” in the sky.
More astronomical delights are expected this new year, with January 2025 being a good month to spot both Venus and Saturn. Be sure to take a look at the sky on January 18, as those planets will appear just 2.2 degrees apart.
Stargazers may also be able to spot blazing meteors in the sky, e.g Quadrantid meteor shower It continues.
This rain, which is expected to peak on Saturday, has been visible since December 26 and will continue until January 12.
Dr Robert Massey, deputy director of the UK's Royal Astronomical Society, said observers hoping to catch a glimpse of celestial fireworks after sunset will need to stay away from light pollution as much as possible.
“If you have time to observe and the weather is good, take a look as it is a perfect New Year's gift.”
