WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Sunday, a day before he and President-elect Donald Trump are sworn in.
Vance and Hahn discussed a range of topics including fentanyl, balancing trade and regional stability, the Trump-Vance transition team said in a statement.
Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the inauguration ceremony after his victory in the presidential elections last year. He sent Shi Han instead.
Vance's meeting with Hahn comes on the heels of a recent phone call between Trump and Xi. During the call, the two leaders discussed issues including TikTok, trade and Taiwan.
This was the first known phone call between the two men since Trump's election in November.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Trump informed his advisors of his desire to travel to China after taking office.
If this trip takes place, it will be his second visit to China as president. Trump traveled to Beijing in 2017 during a trip to Asia, where he visited several other countries.
