WASHINGTON (Reuters) – There is “no indication” that a recently reported hack at the U.S. Treasury Department affected any other federal agency, the U.S. Internet Watchdog (CISA) said on Monday.
Late last month, the US Treasury Department reported that an unspecified number of computers had been compromised by Chinese hackers after the breach of BeyondTrust, which provides cybersecurity services.
BeyondTrust said last month that a limited number of customers were affected but did not elaborate.
“As the criminal investigation continues, BeyondTrust is unable to confirm which other customers may or may not have been affected,” the company said in an email on Monday.
The Washington Post reported that hackers penetrated the US Treasury Department office that administers economic sanctions, aiming in particular to steal information about Chinese entities that the US government might consider imposing financial sanctions on.
Republican lawmakers have demanded a briefing on the hack, the latest in a series of hacks blamed on Beijing.
Liu Bingyu, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, previously described reports of the Treasury Department hack as “irrational” and “slanderous attacks” against China.
