KIEV (Reuters) – The Ukrainian military said it carried out a high-precision strike on Thursday on a Russian command post in Maryino in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces control large swaths of territory after a major incursion.
The Russian military said air defense units shot down four Ukrainian missiles in the area, and the regional governor said the strikes damaged a high-rise residential building and other buildings in a nearby village.
Ukrainian forces remain in the Kursk region five months after sending troops across the border, although the Russian military says much of the lost territory has been regained.
The Ukrainian army said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app: “These strikes disrupt the Russian Federation’s ability to practice terrorism against innocent Ukrainian civilians.”
Another post showed a video of what the military said was damage to a Russian base in Ivanovskoye next to Maryino.
Reuters was unable to independently verify battlefield accounts from either side.
The governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtin, said that the raid on Ivanovskoye led to the smashing of windows in a multi-storey residential building and in private homes. A school, a pharmacy, and a store were also damaged.
A video clip showed work being done to repair the damage to the facade.
