LONDON – The UK Department for Transport (DfT) today announced its commitment to maintaining a competitive environment for online rail ticket sales following the establishment of Great British Railways (GBR). The DfT has confirmed that GBR will consolidate the ticketing sites of individual train operators, while ensuring the private sector continues to thrive in the open market.

The DfT statement precedes an industry-wide consultation on the Rail Reform Bill, due to be launched in the coming weeks. This Bill aims to establish the GBR as the central governing body for the UK passenger rail service. The transition to the new structure is expected to take several years.

Judy Ford (NYSE:), CEO of Trainline, the UK's leading travel app, expressed her support for the government's clear position on market competitiveness and the role of private sector innovation in the rail industry. Trainline, which serves 18 million customers, is known for its high record of customer trust and 25-year history of developing easy-to-use solutions.

A DfT spokesperson stressed the Government's commitment to a strong private sector that fosters innovation and growth, and ultimately encourages more people to use rail transport. The spokesman stressed the government's intention to work closely with industry and private sector players to achieve these goals.

The DfT's full update on the future of online retail by rail is available on the UK Government website. This announcement is based on a press release issued by Trainline plc.
