(Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States needs to control Greenland to ensure international security.
Trump made the comments while signing executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House on the first day of his second term as president.
Trump has expressed interest in making Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, part of the United States since his re-election in November. He did not rule out the use of military or economic force to persuade Denmark to extradite her.
Greenland's Prime Minister, Miot Egedy, who has intensified his push for independence, has repeatedly said that the island is not for sale and that it is up to its people to decide its future.
