Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday there's not “a big chance in hell” that his country will become part of the United States, as President-elect Trump continues his push to make the northern neighbor the 51st US state.
“There is little chance Canada will become part of the United States,” Trudeau wrote on X. “Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s largest trade and security partner.”
Trudeau's response came after Trump said Canada should be a country, while speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump also stressed that if Canada joins the United States, it will not be through military force, but through “economic force.”
“A lot of people in Canada would love to be the 51st state,” the president-elect said Monday in a social media post.
But he also asserted that if Canada and the United States merged, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be lower, and Canada would be “completely safe” from the threats of Russian and Chinese ships “that constantly surround them.”
