Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are aiming to get one foot in the door in the Carabao Cup final on Wednesday, as the pair meet in the first leg of their semi-final.

The Reds are the defending champions having triumphed in this competition during Jurgen Klopp's final season on Merseyside, while Spurs fans are still remembered for their 2008 EFL Cup title – the last time Spurs won a trophy.

Wednesday's duel is likely to be a tough one if the pre-Christmas standoff between the two sides is anything to go by. Liverpool won 6-3 in north London in December in a stunningly open game, with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah both scoring twice.

Tottenham have failed to win any of their three matches since injuries continue to hamper their campaign. Another weak team will be fielded against Liverpool in midweek, with the Reds likely to make adjustments themselves after that A difficult draw on Sunday with rival Manchester United.

Liverpool have endured a relatively rosy season in terms of injuries, but will be without versatile defender Joe Gomez after he injured his hamstring in the 5-0 win over West Ham United. He will be absent until the end of January at the earliest.

Dominik Szoboszlai missed the weekend draw with Manchester United due to illness and Arne Slott confirmed his participation on Wednesday is doubtful.

The Dutchman admitted: “Yesterday (Monday) he was not in (training) yet. If he was there today, I would doubt that he is available to start the match. But I hope he will be there today. Yesterday he was not.”

Goals are all but guaranteed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with last month's nine-goal match a hint of what's to come on Wednesday. However, with Liverpool likely to make adjustments after a tiring encounter with Manchester United last weekend, the goals may be shared more evenly on this occasion.

Liverpool's formidable attack is likely to have fun in midweek too, setting up a hectic affair that could keep Spurs in the running heading to Anfield in early February for the second leg.
