At least three people were killed when gunmen in Haiti opened fire on medical staff, police and journalists during a press conference to announce the reopening of the country's largest public hospital.

Several other people were injured in the attack that occurred on Tuesday on the general hospital in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Pictures posted online show several people injured or dead inside the building.

The Haitian government regained control of the site last July, after it was occupied and destroyed by violent gangs who control much of the city.

Journalists were waiting for the Minister of Health to arrive when the shooting began.

Reports say two journalists and a police officer were shot dead.

The Transitional Presidential Council in Haiti pledged in a statement to punish the perpetrators of the attack.

“We express our sympathy to the families of all the victims, especially the Haitian National Police and all journalists' associations,” the council said.

The people of Haiti continue to suffer unbearable levels of gang violence, despite the formation of a new transitional government in April and the deployment of an international force led by Kenyan police officers six months ago.

Haiti has witnessed a wave of gang violence since the assassination of then-President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

An estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince remains under gang control.

The United Nations says up to 5,000 people have been killed in violence in Haiti this year, and the country is now on the verge of collapse.
