Ruben Amorim admitted this was perhaps the “worst team in Manchester United's history” after this afternoon's 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton.

United were second behind the Seagulls and remained rooted in 13th in the Premier League after a sixth defeat in nine league matches.

Yankuba Mente put Brighton ahead, and although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter added second-half goals for Fabian Horzler's side.

Amorim then tried to gauge the scale of the task ahead as United are now closer to the relegation zone than they were after taking the top four points.

He said: “Imagine this for a Manchester United fan, imagine this for me.

“You get a new coach who loses more than the previous one. Imagine that. We need to survive this moment. I know that.

“We are probably the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want the headlines but I say that because we have to acknowledge that and change that. So, this is your headline.”

It's hard to explain – Amorim

United have earned just 11 points from the 11 matches Amorim has played since replacing Erik Ten Hag in November.

The Portuguese added: “It is difficult to explain, we have to acknowledge the moment and not look around the problem.

“Everyone here is underperforming, regardless of the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any team in the Premier League, let alone Manchester United. It is a really difficult moment but we have to keep going.

“Our opponents are better than us in many details. We cannot be consistent. I am not helping my players at the moment.

“It's a difficult moment. We have to admit that we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, losing home games, losing in the Premier League, we are performing really poorly.

'The masses will suffer'

Amorim said he would stick with his preferred methods even if it meant more pain in the short term.

He said on Sky Sports: “It is clear. I will not change the way I see the match, I am clear about that.

“The players will suffer, the fans will suffer, I'm sorry. I have one way of doing things but we have to survive in this moment. It is very clear to everyone what we are going to do.”
