The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a new advisory warning about the risk of alcohol-related cancer.

Dr. Vivek Murthy issued the guidance on Wednesday after research linked alcohol to at least seven types of cancer.

Experts say drinking alcohol is linked to six types of cancer

In particular, the advisory notes that cancer can increase the risk of developing cancer of the throat, liver, larynx, esophagus, mouth, larynx (voice box) and colorectal cancer.

“Alcohol is a well-established and preventable cause of cancer and is responsible for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States — a greater number than the 13,500 alcohol-related traffic crash deaths annually in the United States — yet the majority of Americans do not,” Murthy said. In advice: “We are not aware of this risk.”
