Hideki Matsuyama finished with a 72-hole PGA Tour record of 35 under par to win The Sentry in Hawaii by three strokes from Collin Morikawa.
The Japanese edged Cameron Smith's 34 to win the same event in 2022 as he claimed his 11th PGA Tour title and third in less than a year.
Matsuyama shot an eight-under 65 at Kapalua on Sunday and bogeyed the seventh on his only shot to fall through the final 59 holes to claim the $3.6 million top prize.
After his eight-foot birdie putt at 18 set a new PGA Tour record, the 32-year-old said: “I'm very happy that it's been achieved.”
Matsuyama's 35th hole for birdie or better — where he also birdied from 107 yards for eagle on the second in his final round — broke the record of Smith three years ago and Sungjae Im's in 2024 at the same venue in 2024.
Morikawa, who started the final round one stroke behind Matsuyama, carded a six-under 67, with his title hopes dashed when he three-putted in succession at five and six to record par and bogey respectively.
“Today he never gave up. I knew I had to be on top of everything, and let some get away with ninth place,” the American said of Matsuyama, who will now rise to fifth in the world rankings.
“I played well with the back nine, but to win on a course like this, conditions like this, you have to get 72 (holes). And I got it for 65.”
I closed with a 65 to finish third on 29 under par, while Taylor Pendreth's albatross — her first on the Plantation course since the PGA Tour season opener moved to Kapalua in 1999 — was five points back in fifth as she went off the field. 200 yards.
“Once I hit him, I knew he was going to be really good (but) I didn’t expect him to go in,” said the Canadian, who finished 13th with 22 under.
“I didn't see it go in but the fans near the green went crazy, so, yeah, it was a really good bonus.”
