Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa prepare for Sunday's showdown at The Sentry with just one shot separating them after each carding an 11-under 62 in the third round.
Former Masters champion Matsuyama leads with 27 under par at Kapalua — a 54-hole record at the event — with two-time major champion Morikawa on 26 under par in his first PGA Tour tournament of 2025.
Matsuyama hit an eagle putt at 18 to equal the course record, but had to settle for birdie, one of 11 Japanese players on record, as he set a personal best on a flawless day in Hawaii and retained his lead into the second round.
American Morikawa also finished with his ninth birdie of the round to go along with a 25-foot eagle putt in fifth that took him to the temporary lead.
“Colin played well and I kind of followed him, very good day,” Matsuyama said. “It's been a lot of fun but I'd like him to take it easy tomorrow.”
“If you look at the greats, they've done it. If you look at Tiger (Woods), he's done it every week,” Morikawa said of the performance in the final round.
“I think if I asked myself: Have I done this every time for the last six years?” Maybe not.)
“But it's tough. What I'll say this year is: 'I've got four days, let's see what I can do.'”
Belgian Thomas Detri is five shots behind Matsuyama in third place with 22 under par after eight under par on Saturday.
South Korea's Sungjae Im is one more shot back at 21-under 62 after being tied with Matsuyama and Morikawa at 11-under 62, while England's Harry Hole is fifth with a 20-under 66 after the third round.
