New York State Sen. Dan Steck, a Republican and Navy veteran, is running for Congress.
Steck has thrown his hat in the ring to succeed Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who will vacate her House seat to become the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. A special election for New York's 21st Congressional District will be held once Stefanik officially leaves Congress.

The north country native, whose state Senate district falls within Stefanik's congressional district, said he is the best candidate to win the Republican seat because he has the highest profile there.
“My argument is that I'm the most electable. If we're concerned about holding this seat and a Republican majority in the House, you want to put forward your candidate who is most likely to win and no one can compare numbers like I'm dealing with how much of the district I actually represent,” Steck told the outlet.

He pointed to his record in the New York legislature and the 104,000 votes he won in the previous state Senate election, nearly half of the total votes Stefanik won in her re-election bid, to support his argument that he is in the best position. “I'm proud of my record of accomplishment, my resume and my principles. I don't have any voices that I'm embarrassed to have to explain the way someone from the other side of the aisle I've worked with might have to. Explain,” Steck said.

On the campaign trail to be the Republican nominee to succeed Stefanik, Stec joins forces with Sticker Mule CEO Anthony Constantino, an outsider who gained fame through a 100-foot “Vote for Trump” sign he installed in upstate New York. Constantinou is self-funding his campaign and has pledged $2.6 million to the effort.

Other Republicans mentioned as potential candidates include state Assembly members Robert Smolen and Christopher Tagoe; and Rensselaer County Executive Stephen McLaughlin, according to WWNY. Potential Democratic candidates include Assemblyman Billy Jones, whose state district lies east of St. Lawrence County, as well as previous unsuccessful challengers to Stefanik such as Matt Castelli and Paula Collins.
There will be no traditional GOP primary in the special election. Instead, bipartisan candidates will be selected by the region's party chairs.
