Erling Haaland recently put pen to paper on a 10-year deal with Manchester City, with outspoken critic Stan Collymore comparing it to Winston Bogarde's deal at Chelsea.
Barcelona and Real Madrid were unable to land Haaland Ultimately, it was because of a record deal handed to the Norwegian that changed the football landscape in England once again.
Despite the obvious spending Manchester City will offer 100 million euros for the Barcelona star It looks like it's the summer, so either the PSR doesn't apply to them or they're making some very creative calculations at this point – especially when you consider they still have various charges hanging over them which could lead to relegation.
A deal for Erling Haaland makes commercial sense
However, Collymore, despite the comparison, believes City have done a good job.
“Ten years, two years, one year, it makes no difference. All it does is give the player the whip hand,” he told CaughtOffside for his Exclusive column.
“Winston Boogaard all those years ago at Chelsea, he was on £40 or £60,000 a week and he wasn't going to go anywhere. They didn't want to take him out. He's done it and Erling Haaland can do it.
An Italian legend gives Manchester City hope of signing the Juventus star!
“(…) I think Manchester City will look at it and say if we lose to Real Madrid in a few years, we've probably saved ourselves £300m/£400m in the grand scheme of things. How?
Man City's intelligence is evident in Erling Haaland's contract terms
“Think how much it would cost them to buy Erling Haaland two or three more times? The answer is that it's somewhere between £150m/£200m per transfer, so if you add that up, it's somewhere in the region of £400m/£500m.” million pounds sterling.
“Let's say the contract is worth £700m/£800m. If he leaves before the end of the matter, it means they've already made a sound and solid financial decision that, even in the crazy world of football, makes business sense for them.
It's an interesting way to look at things and also puts the way Chelsea dole out long-term contracts to players into perspective.
When you look at clubs like Newcastle, Tottenham and others, they all have to think about every incoming and outgoing transfer, while City outperforms PSR because of the smart way they structure their deals for the future.
