Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said that he understands the fans' booing of him and his team during the 5-2 win over Celta Vigo in the Spanish King's Cup.

Real Madrid suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat against its rival Barcelona last week, then wasted a two-goal lead against Celta Vigo, before recovering and achieving victory in overtime.

Sections of the crowd made their feelings clear when two late goals – including a stoppage-time penalty from former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso – left the tie still tied after 90 minutes.

But Real responded with victory when youngster Indyk scored two goals in extra time to book a place in the quarter-finals.

“I see it as a wake-up call from the fans to the team and its coach. It is an acceptable wake-up call after what happened in the match against Barcelona. After that the team reacted well,” Ancelotti said.

“The fans booed us to wake us up, and then the team started to make the game more difficult and we were on our way to winning 2-0.

“But then the fans started to push, and when Santiago Bernabeu pushes, it's something very special for us.

“It's good that we played well in extra time and were able to win the game, so it was all good in the end.”

Ancelotti was not happy with the goals his team conceded and urged his players to maintain focus in the final minutes of matches.

“The tension goes down in the end. We made two mistakes and allowed our opponent to get back into the game, leaving things open in a game that practically ended with two goals in front,” Ancelotti said.

“We gifted our opponents two late goals when the game was about to end. First we made a huge mistake in putting the ball in play, then in the second goal it was a result of poor positioning in defence. We played very well for over 70 minutes.

“Obviously this is something that cannot happen. We have to try to train more to avoid these kind of mistakes and not slow down at the end of matches.

Real Madrid faces Las Palmas in the Spanish League on Sunday afternoon.
