Popular Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was rushed to hospital with multiple stab wounds after an intruder reportedly broke into his house and attacked him.
The attack occurred early Thursday morning in an upscale neighborhood in Mumbai, where Khan lives with his family.
The city police told BBC Marathi that the actor was injured after an altercation broke out between him and an unknown man who entered his house sometime after midnight.
Khan's family has not made any public statements, but his publicity team said it was a case of “attempted robbery” without providing any further details.
Khan was rushed to the city's Lilavati Hospital where he is undergoing surgery.
Neeraj Uttamani, the hospital's director of operations, told the BBC that Khan suffered six stab wounds, two of which were deep.
He added, “One of them is close to the spine and is being operated on by a team of specialized doctors.”
The police launched an investigation.
“An unknown person entered the actor's house. After that, an altercation broke out between him and the intruder,” Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner Dixit Gedam said.
In a statement issued Thursday morning, the actor's team asked his fans to respect his privacy.
“We ask the media and fans to be patient. This is a police matter. We will keep you updated on the situation,” they said.
