Nerds love to debate which superhero movie is the best, and get into nasty arguments about whether, e.g. Avengers: Endgame Or the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man They are the best films in this genre. With all due respect to all the true believers debating which movie to watch next, the best superhero movie has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The best superhero movie of course The sky is highand streaming it on Disney+ now is the best way to discover just how beautiful this movie is.
The high sky is rising
hypothesis The sky is high It's simple: The film focuses on a kind of superhero academy (the titular Sky High), where today's talented young men train to be tomorrow's superheroes and sidekicks. Our main character is the son of a superhero couple who doesn't seem to have powers of his own, making it difficult for him to fit in or find friends among all these gifted kids. Ultimately, he discovers a power he never knew he had, but this may or may not be enough to stop a powerful enemy from the past who has found a new way to terrorize the present.
If you're a fan of superheroes or superhero media, the cast is a veritable “who's who” of big names, including Kurt Russell as the Superman-like patriarch and Bruce Campbell Like the strangest sports teacher in the world. Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, plays the principal of Sky High, and Dave Foley plays the former sidekick turned teacher alongside his classmate. Kids in the hall alumnus Kevin MacDonald (who plays the science teacher with a comically oversized head). As for the younger stars, the main character is played by Michael Angarano, who stars alongside future superhero legends Danielle Panabaker and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
at the box office, The sky is high It proved to be a modest success, grossing $86.4 million against a budget of $35 million. It has also been a modest success among critics, with the film currently holding a 74 percent critical rating Rotten tomatoes. Overall, these critics felt that the film was a bit derivative but still managed to entertain from start to finish.
Why Sky High is the best
Now it's time to address the elephant in the room: The sky is high It didn't attract the biggest box office in the world, nor did it exactly impress critics. So why do I call this the best superhero movie on Disney+, a streaming platform where you can watch the entire MCU at any time? For one thing, this film embraces the pure, goofy fun of the genre. Although the MCU has been a lot more fun than the DCEU (thank goodness for that!), some of its better films are often buried under the weight of being either too realistic or too heavy-handed.
That's why he loved the long box, The sky is high Is this much stronger because it embraces the goofier side of comic books instead of trying to look cool. The MCU has previously done annoying things like replacing the titular comic villain The Mandarin with a drug-addicted, alter-ego style actor Ms. Marvel From a rubber hero to a hero with light powers that will look less ridiculous on screen. Meanwhile, The sky is high There are characters riding a school bus to an air force academy and a superhero father who sincerely considers dropping his son into a vat of toxic waste to finally help the young man develop his abilities.
The sky is high It's not a perfect movie, of course, but each scene is better than the sum of its parts. It succeeds as a superhero film, but it also works as a great comedy and a very unconventional coming-of-age story, offering the kinds of great chemistry and character development that recent MCU films have been sorely lacking. Plus, the veteran actors have a lot of fun chewing up the scenery ensuring you'll never get bored before the credits roll.
Will you find The sky is high Are you going to fail this movie and go watch more Marvel movies instead? You won't know until you stream it on Disney+. And if director Mike Mitchell has his way and manages to create a sequel in the MCU, this cinematic universe might get more of what it desperately needs: laughs and heart.
