The interception helped prevent potentially the biggest upset in the new CFP format, and what would have been one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport.
Texas, ranked No. 3 in the nation, entered the game as a 13.5-point favorite. But the No. 12 Sun Devils never let up, as running back Cam Skattebo put up 143 receiving yards with two touchdowns and 99 receiving yards to lead the near-slamming effort.
But Ewers kept things under control for the Longhorns, throwing for 322 yards with three touchdowns while wide receiver Matthew Golden put up 149 yards with a touchdown catch.
Golden's touchdown catch came on the deciding fourth-and-13 play of the first overtime period, when Texas was one shot away from elimination. Golden got open at midcourt and picked off an Ewers pass to force a second overtime and give the Longhorns a chance to avoid the historic upset.
