The Lions clinched a spot in the playoffs and can clinch the top seed in the NFC with two more wins, but just in case Jared Goff goes down, they wanted to go with someone with experience; Hendon Hooker served as Goff's backup all season.
Bridgewater was the Lions' backup last year.
Bridgewater was selected in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 and started 65 games during his NFL career. He also spent two seasons in New Orleans when Dan Campbell He was an assistant with the Saints.
Campbell raved about his relationship with Bridgewater during his media availability Thursday.
“I've been in contact with Teddy for a while, and that was something that was always a possibility. We all know what Teddy was doing there and giving back to his community, and they won the championship there, so his first practice was very good,” Campbell said.
“To be able to add someone in here that's experienced, stays in shape, throws the ball, just have him practice back here a little bit. He brings a level of professionalism, a veteran presence, and a great person to our team.”
