Batting great Sunil Gavaskar spoke about India captain Rohit Sharma's future in Tests. Rohit wondered if he has given another chance to a player who performed like him in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Since the last few months, Rohit Sharma's Test career has seen a massive decline. This is because the captain of the India national cricket team failed to achieve thiso He lit up the stage and struggled to even reach double figures, which speaks volumes about his poor form.

Rohit Sharma failed to participate in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Rohit failed to participate in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well. The India national cricket team captain has looked nervous with the bat since joining the team for the second match of the series in Adelaide. He batted in the middle order in two matches but failed and then advanced.

Then, in the fourth Test, he opened the innings, but the same fate followed. This eventually led to India national cricket team captain Rohit receiving a call-up to the team as he continued to drop himself in the final match of the series. In Tests against Australia, he scored just 31 runs at a paltry average of 6.20.

Would he have given another chance to a player who had performed like that? – Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma

Sunil Gavaskar spoke about the situation surrounding Rohit Sharma, saying that if the selectors wanted to give another chance to the skipper because of what he did, it would be something different. But he wondered if another player would get the same treatment. He said in statements to “Star Sports”:

“If he was a selector, you don't have a vote as captain but you are a chosen member of the selection committee, would he have given another chance to a player who performs like that? If you said, yes, you would have given another chance to such a player, then it's different.”

If another player has had a lot of failures, three Test matches against New Zealand and three Test matches here, and you have said you want to pick him, then it is a different matter, otherwise it is clear to the selection committee.”

The second thing is about age – Sunil Gavaskar is not confident of playing Rohit Sharma until 2027

Sunil Gavaskar also pointed out the age factor, saying that players in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli do not have that factor either. He believes that if the first team is not ready for the next WTC final, they should not be playing in England. He added:

“The second thing is about age. It is different if a person is 25 or 26 years old. Whatever I said earlier, it is not about Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli or (Ravichandran) Ashwin; I am saying that the next World Test Championship will start in June and it will be a series in England.” “

Then when the final is two years later in June 2027, will all these players be available for it? By availability I mean whether they will be fit to play, whether they will be fit in terms of performance. If not, I would say start over with the England series.”
