It is crucial for Germany to begin a period of economic growth, German Finance Minister Jörg Kukes told CNBC on Thursday, adding that structural weaknesses must be addressed.

“We just revised the IMF's growth forecasts again,” Cookes told CNBC's Karen Tsu and Steve Sedgwick at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“The structural weaknesses in our economy must certainly be addressed,” he added. “It is really important that we get on the path to economic growth.”

Kokes became German Finance Minister in November, succeeding Christian Lindner, who was dismissed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz after months of controversy and clashes over the economy and budget.

Lindner's dismissal ended Germany's previous ruling coalition, which consisted of Schulz's Social Democratic Party, Lindner's Free Democratic Party, and the Green Party. This in turn led to the German national elections being brought forward to February 23.

“Elections are about the economy,” Kokis added.
