Horror comedy has always been a subgenre that takes advantage of a healthy amount of self-awareness and meta humor to get its point across. Through extreme violence, acknowledgment of common tropes, and use of gross and hilarious amounts of violence, Cabin in the woods is the absolute king of horror comedy because it celebrates its inherent silliness with an unimaginable amount of enthusiasm. Not only will you find yourself laughing in disbelief while watching Cabin in the woodsyou'll then have trouble watching similar horror movie plots played out straight because of how effectively they're mocked.
Technicians
Cabin in the woods It makes you think strongly about the “man behind the curtain” when the narrative framework is created through lab technicians Gary Steterson (Richard Jenkins) and Steve Hadley (Bradley Whitford). Revealing that they are about to embark on an annual ritual that involves five college students spending the weekend at an isolated cabin in the woods, Gary and Steve head to a massive underground laboratory to do what they do best: witness the violent deaths of archetypal character models. For some reasons that have not yet been revealed.
All the viewer is told at the time is that a group of students are preparing to party, when in fact the real party is taking place underground where Gary and Steve open a betting pool with the lives of the chosen victims in the balance.
Smashing discs and switches and preparing for the impending bloodbath, the technicians usher their subjects into the titular cabin so they can unleash a host of monsters, demons, and zombies to do their bidding.
Victims
Never shying away from the tried-and-true horror tropes we all know and love, Cabin in the woods Introducing Dana (Kristin Connolly), Curt Vaughan (Chris Hemsworth) and Jules Loden (Anna Hutchison), Marty Michalski (Fran Kranz), and Holden McCrea (Jesse Williams).
Each character embodies the classic horror movie victims you'd expect – Marty is the talkative stoner who won't shut up about conspiracy theories, while Anna is known for being the promiscuous girl of the group.
Rounding out the group are Kurt and Holden, who play on the same soccer team while attending college, and the wise-cracking Dana.
Cabin
Since the two narratives mentioned above operate simultaneously, Cabin in the woods He plays a group of puppets trying to survive the whims of their sadistic masters in the underground facility. From Mordecai The Harbinger's (Tim de Zarn) warnings about the cabin's violent past to the Latin incantations written in an old diary by the mysterious Patience Buckner (Jodelle Ferland) found in the cabin's basement, every interaction is meticulously planned and forced through the use of trap doors, pheromone fog, And other manufactured bumps into the night that turn your care-free weekend into your stereotypical slasher movie.
For example, when Kurt suggests that the group stay together after a violent fight, he immediately changes his mind and suggests that the group split up to cover more ground when he walks past a vent emitting a mist designed to reduce his inhibitions.
A hilarious bloodbath of the highest order
Cabin plot in Cabin in the woods It's derived from design, which is why this movie is so fun to watch. On the one hand, you become emotionally invested as the five chosen victims navigate their way through the treacherous jungle and fight for their lives. But once you're reminded that there's a cheering room full of technicians watching their every move and betting on the outcome, you want to spend $20 on Virgo's survival because you want to believe that “The ultimate girl“He always comes out alive.
Cabin in the woods It's unlike any other slasher movie you've ever seen before. Although it borrows heavily from all of the classic Slash games, it not only attempts to self-consciously reinvent the genre, but it succeeds.
