Sir Kerr Starmer urged on Monday night the leaders of the European Union to recover with Britain five years after Britain left the European Union, as he refused to “choose” between close relations with Brussels or Washington.
Starmer, the first British Prime Minister to address the European Council of European Union leaders since then Britain's exit from the European UnionHe said he wanted to be a new defensive and security agreement at the heart of the “reset” relationship.
When asked if he can have close economic relations with both Europe and the US states of Donald Trump, Starmer said: “Every of these relationships is very important for us. We do not choose between them.”
This confirmation is likely to be tested in the coming months if Trump continues his threat to definitions against European UnionWhile Starmer tries to avoid such fate by searching for improved trade conditions with the United States.
The European Council dinner was on Monday night at the D'EgMont Palace in Brussels, a symbolic rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, after a little more than five years after the ease of Brexit on January 31, 2020.
In the same palace, conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath signed the treaty that Britain took to the European economic community – a pioneer in the European Union – in 1972.
Starmer hopes that by presenting a work closely on military and intelligence issues with the European Union – a field in which the UK has traditional power points – can start opening broad economic benefits.
The proposed security and defense agreement-which will also cover areas such as the treatment of illegal immigration-will also be covered in broader negotiations in the United Kingdom in the coming months.
Negotiations with Brussels are likely to be difficult for a custard, as the European Union is demanding its continuous access to British fishing water and the youth transport scheme that allows the citizens of the European Union under the age of 30 to travel and work in Britain.
The full European Union summit is expected to take place in April or May to try to avoid these talks, with an increasing feeling in European capitals that the continent needs to heal the old wounds, especially with Trump's bitterness against American Atlantic allies.
Starmer is ready for some political risks, including seeking to remove barriers that prevent trade in food products – even if this requires the United Kingdom to obey the rules of the European Union and the European Court of Justice.
He is also looking to link the UK carbon emissions market to the European Union Special Union, and it is possible that it will participate in a trade zone in the European Extremist Union, a step that will stop participating in the Customs Union of the mass.
The issue of Britain's exit from the European Union is still poisonous in the United Kingdom, although a recent survey of Yougov found that 55 percent of people say it is now wrong to leave the European Union, as only 11 percent saw Britain's exit from the European Union as More success than failure.
Conservative critics were called to call a 50-year-old team of officials accused of negotiating a improved deal in Britain's exit from the European Union-head of the former treasury official, Michael Ellam, the “surrender band”.
Stemer, speaking at the NATO headquarters in Brussels before the European Union meeting, said he wanted Britain and the European Union “ambitious” and is closely working on defense cooperation, including in buying military equipment.
He said: “Our defensive spending is now 2.3 percent of GDP and we are working hard to place the path to 2.5 percent.” It is not clear when the UK will strike this goal.
“We cannot be suspended when it comes to peace issues on our continent. We must perform and this is what is determined to do.”
While France and other coastal countries want to settle issues on fisheries as a front of a wider deal from the European Union in the United Kingdom, other countries will bring their own table concerns.
“Of course, there is still one major piece that must be completed in the UK settlement after Britain's exit from the European Union, Gibraltar,” a Spanish Foreign Ministry official said. “Full normalization will not be possible until this agreement is reached.”
