“star wars” Actor Angus McInnes, best known for his role as John “Dutch” Vander in two of the films in the series, has died. He was 77 years old.

“Our hearts are broken. He was home surrounded by love and we had tremendous support. We thank everyone for the beautiful tribute,” the McInnis family wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Even in his final month, he remained strong, displaying a unique sense of humor that can bring light to the darkest of situations,” McInnis' longtime manager told Fox News Digital in a statement.

In a statement shared on the actor's Facebook page on Monday, McInnes' family confirmed that he died on December 23.

“To all Angus fans around the world, with broken hearts, we write this: Angus McInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and actor passed away on December 23, 2024. He leaves us peacefully, surrounded by his parents.” Family and love,” they wrote.

MacInnes played Vander, a spaceship pilot who was the leader of the Rebellion's Golden Squadron in the franchise's first film, 1977's “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.” The Canadian native returned to the franchise to voice his character in 2016's “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which featured His last film role.

In their Facebook post, the McInnes family recalled the actor's love for his “Star Wars” fans.

“For Angus, Star Wars fans held a special place in his heart.” “He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing your passion for the saga. He was humbled, delighted, and continually honored by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community.”

MacInnes' film and television career spanned four decades. Born on October 27, 1947 in Ontario, he made his film debut in the 1975 Canadian science fiction sports film “Rollerball”.

The actor went on to appear in a number of Other movies Including “Superman II”, “Witness”, “Hellbound: Hellraiser II”, “Atlantic City”, “Judge Dredd”, “Hellboy”, “Eyes Wide Shut”, “The Black Dahlia”, “Captain Phillips” and more .

His television credits include roles in Space: 1999, The Littlest Hobo, The New Statesman, Vikings, and River City.

“His work touched the lives of countless people, and he was so proud to be a part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences around the world,” his family wrote in their post.

They added: “Angus was more than just an actor, he was a kind, thoughtful and generous soul who brought warmth and humor to the lives of all who knew him.”

He added: “He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow actors, as well as his fans around the world. His family thanks you all.”
