Southampton parted ways with manager Russell Martin after their 5-0 defeat at Tottenham, which left the club nine points from safety in the Premier League.

The 38-year-old successfully returned Saints to the Premier League last season, clinching promotion with a memorable final win over Leeds at Wembley.

However, this season has been a stark contrast, as Southampton have endured a string of strong performances, losing 13 of their 16 league games so far.

The team's only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they have struggled to find the back of the net, scoring just 11 goals – the fewest in the league.

“Going into the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we readjusted to life in League One, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world,” Southampton said in a statement.

But the reality of our situation is clear. The Board has supported Russell and his staff and been upfront and transparent about our expectations.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given to the club on and off the field over the past 18 months.

He added: “Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have great memories of last season, especially the win in the final in May.”

Simon Rask, the club's Under-21s coach, has been appointed interim coach and will oversee the first team starting with the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin's departure coincides with another managerial exit from the Premier League, with Wolves also announcing the sacking of Gary O'Neill on the same day.

Southampton's struggles in the Championship this season have highlighted the difficulties of adjusting to life in the Premier League, and the club will now look for a new direction to reignite their survival hopes.
