Shakur Stevenson reiterated this week that he will never fight his good friend Keshawn Davis, regardless of the money offered to him. The WBC lightweight champion says he and Keshawn used to go to gyms when they were younger and beat up different fighters. They became close.
Stevenson says he and Keyshawn will do it “He took up boxing.“So far, neither of these fighters has shown the ability to be one of the best in the sport. Shakur has an outdated and boring Mayweather style in his last legs, and Keshawn has a similar style.
Weight bully?
The difference with Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) is that he is huge for the lightweight division and arguably should be fighting at 147 instead of 135. He looks huge for the lightweight division. If Keyshawn had to fight where he belongs at welterweight against killers like Jaron “Butz” EnnisHis career won't be worth anything.
Keyshawn's promoters at Top Rank would likely never agree to let him fight Boots because his chances of success would be nil, and their investment in his career would be wasted.
Keyshawn fights against smaller and older guys in the lightweight divisions, and has a chance as a junior to become a champion but not a star. If he moves up to where he should be fighting at welterweight, he is fodder for fighters in that division.
“When we arrived, Keshawn and I would go to every gym, and we would hit our a**. “We used to go to gyms and beat (the fighters) in some regular workouts,” Shakur Stevenson told Cigar Talk's YouTube Channel about why he never fought Keyshawn Davis.
“Any gym. Like a high level. When I went to fight Lomachenko, Keshawn was there beating another Olympic gold medalist. Keshawn was always with me. Once you get to that level, we knew this day would come.”
It was just a matter of time. We knew we would be able to knock out (the fighters)** and dominate the sport of boxing. “Now, the fans are going to demand and want to see us fight,” Shakur said of fans starting to push to see him and Keshawn fight in a division that lacks name fighters at the top.
Undefeated, untested
Keshun failed at the 2020 Olympics, losing to Cuban Andy Cruz. It wasn't a close fight. As professionals, Keshawn and Shakur have not been able to beat any high-level fighters yet. Shakur has defeated many older and younger fighters, Oscar Valdez and Jamal Herring, but he has never faced anyone at the top level. That's why he was chosen to defend against Floyd Scofield. Shakur is desperate.
He's been calling out Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, but he hasn't even gotten a bite out of either of those fighters. One explanation for this is Stevenson's boring style. He is constantly booed by fans every time he fights, and has no fan base outside of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
Keyshawn has never fought anyone as talented during his career and has shown no interest in avenging his four losses to Andy Crews. He appears to be interested in taking the easy route, as he will challenge WBO lightweight champion Denis Perincek next month on February 14. Davis says he believes a fight with WBA champion Gervonta Davis will happen once he wins the WBO title. This seems like a pipe dream.
“It's not about the money,” Shakur said when told that Turki Al Sheikh would likely offer him and Keshawn a lot of money to fight together. “It's not about the money. I'm not one of those (fighters) that makes me money, bro.
It's unfortunate that Shakur doesn't want to fight his friend Keshawn, because that might be his best option for a big lightweight bout. Unless Turk offers Tank Davis huge millions, that fight won't happen for Stevenson. IBF lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko likely won't fight Shakur either because he's approaching 37 years old, and doesn't want to fight a feud this late in his career. If he were younger, Loma would have fought that battle in a second. But now that doesn't seem likely.
Once Tank and Lomachenko are removed from the equation, Keshawn is the only one left for Shakur. There's William Zepeda, but he won't give Shakur the kind of push that a fight against Loma and Gervonta would.
