Seven tourists in Fiji have been sent to hospital on suspicion of alcohol poisoning and are said to be in a critical condition.

They are believed to have drank cocktails at one of the resort's bars on Saturday night local time and shortly afterwards developed symptoms of nausea, vomiting and nervousness.

Four of the seven are Australian, aged between 18 and 56, according to local media reports citing the Department of Health.

The incident comes weeks after Six tourists were killed in the Southeast Asian country of Laos Due to suspected methanol poisoning.

The tourists in Fiji, who were reportedly staying at a resort on the Coral Coast, were initially taken to Sigatoka Hospital.

They were all later transferred to Lautoka Hospital, according to the Fiji Times.

An Australian Foreign Ministry spokesman told the BBC that two Australian families in Fiji were receiving consular assistance.
