Serhii Bohachuk has volunteered to be the next challenger for WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in his next fight in March. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) saw two of his options for his next fight rejected by the World Boxing Organization last week.
Initially, Fundora planned to defend against Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but the WBO chose not to approve the fight. Their reasons were that Spence had not fought in 1.5 years. Coming off a loss he has never fought below 154, nor is he ranked in the WBO top 15.
Team Fundora reportedly wanted to use Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), but he wasn't ranked in the top 15 either, so he wasn't a good prospect or opponent.
Dangerous challenge
Former WBC interim 154-pound champion Bohachuk is ranked No. 8 in the WBO, making him perfect for Fundora to use as an opponent in his March 30 fight. The only problem is that Fundora management may not want to use Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs), because he is dangerous.
Although Fundora proved he could beat a baseball player last year in Tim Tszyu, it's a different story with Bohachuk. He's not someone who loads up single shots like Tszyu does. He consistently throws heavy punches in the same way Artur Beterbiev does, and is good at fighting on the inside. It can generate a lot of energy from within. Tszyu couldn't do it.
If Fundora wants to work his way down the WBO top 15 contenders list, they may not be happy about having Sebastian fight someone like Charles Conwell or Xander Zayas either. These are two fights, just as if he had fought Bohachuk.
If Fundora feels he is ready, he should fight Bohachuk because he is free and he volunteers to fight him. This is half the battle.
Sebastian let's fight in Los Angeles
