Garcelle admitted that she often wondered what she did wrong as a mother during the throes of her son's addiction.
“I had to practice tough love,” she said of her relationship with her son during that period. “I knew he was homeless, I knew he was in a bad place, and I couldn't do anything.”

“Years ago, I was at home (with) my girlfriend. We were hanging out and it was getting late,” she said. “We heard a noise and I looked outside. I turned on the light and saw him as Oliver.
“He was Oliver in body type, but he wasn't Oliver. The way he acted, the way his eyes looked, the way he was eccentric,” Garcelle continued.
She said Oliver was trying to get into the pool house before she stopped him.
“This is my son that I will not open the door for,” Garcelle recalled through tears. “I watched him walk away and didn't greet him. I felt 1,000 pounds of guilt for not letting him in.

“If we're all honest, I'm not a perfect mother,” she told her colleagues at the time. “My son Oliver has dealt with addiction since he was in fifth grade. We've been through a lot. … I would never judge another parent. Sometimes I feel like I did something wrong because I was too lenient with him.
