One of the biggest things that separated Ronald Moore BATLESTAR GALACTICA Restarting is that they faced without fear of political and social issues at that time. The most stable issue was the American war on terrorism and how good people led to support or even engaging in completely immoral acts. On one occasion, though, this show was almost directed when Syfy Execs responded against the “Meat and Bones” ring for filming the explicit torture.
Meat and bone
According to the CEO David IK, “flesh and bones” are “reputable” because “it may represent the period of tension and the dispute between us and the network.” This is because “there were drafts of the text that were somewhat extremist in terms of what Kara would do for the two people, and they were a symbol of what was going on in Guantanamo and places like this.” In a real part of the paradox, the show wanted to shed light on what makes torture evil, but Syfy worried that these scenes would make the fans uncomfortable, which were the goal of the producers.
Ike admitted that in the “body and bones”, perhaps “the relationship with our own culture was more literal, accurate and less metaphor than it was” in the previous episodes. Perhaps because of this, the producers and Syfy Execs ended with the same arguments behind the scenes that Ronald Moore wanted to own the audience after watching. As you pointed out, they found themselves asking the network questions like, “It is not a person, why do you tell us that we cut the scene where its eyebrows come out?!”
After saying this, Ick admitted that the previous “meat and bones” drafts did not have that exactly A kind of torture in it, but this was a representative sample of the scenes that made the producers ask Syfy, “Why do you give us sadness about this?” The problem was, in the end, “We were trying to take something real and force the audience to face the same problem that the network was facing.” But the fact that the network has almost had a problem in these scenes almost prevented this border ring from seeing daylight.
It seems that Moore, Ike, and the rest BATLESTAR GALACTICA Creative Team wanted to highlight both the ethics of torture in the real world in places like Guantanamo Bay and the mental gymnastics conducted by those who left these measures in the aftermath of September 11. When reports on the detainees in the torture of the military in the United States, many defenders rushed to justify what was clear that the atrocities of war crimes by adhering to the inhuman language of the government. For example, these were not prisoners of war, these were “enemy fighters” who were members of the “Axis of Evil”.
The common completion of this abstraction from humanity was that torture is always Wrong regardless of who is done and calm all those who participate in it. We can see that the speech plays in “Flessh and Bone”, where Starbook is accused of interrogating Kelon, who claims to plan a nuclear bomb on one of the ships in the civil fleet. She resorted to torture in an attempt to obtain the information they need, and the masses become more and more naturally to see what they do, even knowing the number of lives that are likely to be at the stake.
This is the point, of course: Starbuck does not have a problem in torturing Cylon in “flesh and bones” because it does not see it as a person but instead as a machine without a soul. But we feel uncomfortable because he is starving and sowing and even groop like a person, and whenever we see our hero tortured him, the more we are anxious that she loses an essential part of her soul. This was the great mirror that David EK and Ronald Moore were trying to withstand society, where they faced those who agreed to torture in the Gulf of Guantanamo with the ugly of really painful pain.
However, the producers were very good at their work. Early text programs for “meat and bones” were brutal enough to make the network worry about placing this torture on the screen. At the same time, the creative team behind the show was concerned that if they did not explain how bad this type of things, more of their fans would support him greatly. Fortunately, the last episode still indicates her point of view in a strong way, (to reduce the network, frankly, we had no Starbuck Gouge a Cylon before the credits revolve.
