Screams after the referee's whistle are common NHL. What is not common is to see a star goalkeeper join the fray after the whistle.

during New York Rangers Coming off a 5-0 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday in New York, star goalie Igor Shesterkin rushed into the middle of the fight and was ready to swing.

The Rangers took a 3-0 lead with 12:51 left in the third period over the Senators when things got crazy at Madison Square Garden.

Captain of Senators Brady Tkachuk went after a loose puck around the neck and collided with Rangers star goaltender Igor Shesterkin, sending the goaltender back into his own net.

All five Rangers players on the ice immediately came to their goaltender's defense as they swarmed Tkachuk.

Then the rest of the Senators players came on the ice to defend their captain, and eventually every Ranger and Senators skater came together in a shoving match.

As all the chaos was unfolding, Shesterkin crouched in the crease, collecting himself.

Then suddenly, as the chaos began to subside, Shesterkin rose up and rushed straight into the melee and went after Tkachuk.

Tkachuk saw Shesterkin coming and punched the goaltender's helmet, knocking Shesterkin to the ground, while Shesterkin threw a block towards Tkachuk.

Tkachuk, who caught Rangers forward Matt Rempe with his right arm, then scrambled with Shesterkin before referees intervened and removed Shesterkin from the huddle.

As Shesterkin was pulled away, Rempe, known for being combative in his short time in the NHL, went after Tkachuk.

But the referee got between the two and did not allow them to fight, despite exchanging blows between Rempe and Tkachuk around the referee.

Once order was restored on the ice, the referees came together and issued a lot of penalty kicks.

Shesterkin was penalized for two minutes for leaving the goalkeeper's crease. Remby was given a double penalty for roughing.

Tkachuk was also given a double minor penalty for roughness, and was also penalized for goalkeeper interference.

Senators center Shane Pinto was also given a minor penalty for hitting Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren.

The Rangers ended up playing on the power play after all the penalties, and Artemi Panarin capitalized to make it 4-0.

Alexis Lafreniere, Arthur Kaliyev, Rempe, Panarin and Will Coyle all scored in the Rangers win.

The Rangers are 7-1-3 in their last 11 games and are back in the wild-card race after a terrible stretch in which they won just four of 19 games in December.

For Shesterkin, this was his second straight game in which he saved all 20 Senators' shots on net.

The Rangers will look to continue their winning ways when they face off Philadelphia Flyers Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.

The Senators face off next Boston Bruins Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
