“At a time when America’s adversaries look to overturn our global leadership and destabilize our alliances, I join the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be a strong voice supporting our allies and fighting for freedom, democracy, and justice around the world.” Rosen said in a statement.
He added: “I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to strengthen America's global partnerships and confront threats from Iran, Russia, and China. As a member of the committee, I will also ensure that the United States' commitment to supporting our democratic ally Israel remains steadfast and unconditional.”

The outgoing SFRC chairman, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., has long supported Israel, and his departure from the committee would typically leave the Democratic side somewhat unbalanced because many other members have been more critical of the U.S. ally.
Current Democratic committee members include Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-Virginia, Chris Coons, D-Delaware, Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, and Cory Booker, D-Ore. Maryland, Brian Schatz, Democrat of Hawaii, Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland, and Tammy Duckworth, Democrat of Illinois.
Six of the nine current Democrats recently voted in favor of resolutions aimed at preventing the transfer of weapons to Israel. Incoming SFRC ranking members Shaheen, Merkley, Schatz, Van Hollen, Kaine and Murphy were among 19 Democrats who favored some or all of the three measures to do so on the Senate floor in November.

With the addition of Rosen, there may be greater potential for bipartisan action on the part of the committee, especially regarding Israel.
The committee will be chaired by Senator James Risch, Republican of Idaho, in the new Congress.
