English club Plymouth announced the appointment of Miron Muslić as the club's new coach, succeeding Wayne Rooney.

The 42-year-old former Cercle Brugge coach signed a three-and-a-half-year contract to succeed Rooney, who left the club on New Year's Eve.

Muslić was sacked by Cercle Brugge last December, as the team struggled in the Belgian Pro League, but he led them through the group stage of the Conference League.

The Austrian coach will watch his new team from the stands when they face Brentford in the FA Cup on Saturday before turning his attention to trying to stay in the tournament.

Argyle sit at the bottom of the standings, three points from safety.

Chairman Simon Hallett told the Plymouth website: “Miron had a clear vision of how he wanted to take Argyle forward and demonstrated a deep tactical awareness that demonstrated exactly how he wanted the team to prepare and play.”

“He has come with glowing comments from his time at Cercle Brugge where he took the team from a lowly league position to European football, which is no small feat.

“I want to welcome him to the club and look forward to seeing him make an immediate impact on the team.”
