Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have led tributes to Wayne Mardle's family, following the death of his wife Donna before the World Darts Championship.
Donna Mardle died at the age of 52 earlier this week, after a short illness, with Sky Sports Darts announcing her death during coverage of the opening day of this year's competition at Alexandra Palace.
Broadcaster Emma Paton said during the coverage: “Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness.”
“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”
The PDC issued a short statement after announcing her death that said: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family, following the death of his wife Donna earlier this week.”
The darts world was quick to send its condolences on social media, with players – past and present – and fans sending wishes of support to Mardle and his family.
“Very sad to hear of Donna Mardle's passing. Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family,” Taylor, a 16-time world champion, said on Channel X.
Five-time world champion Van Barneveld added: “I am extremely shocked and saddened to hear of Donna Mardle's passing this evening. Sending my condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and your family.”
Former BDO world champion Stephen Ponting, who is also part of this year's line-up, posted: “My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with Wayne and his family on the sad loss of his beloved wife and best friend Donna.”
“Life's too short. Love you mate,” said Steve Beaton, who ended a run of 33 consecutive World Darts Championship appearances when he failed to qualify.
