Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs had a scare on Sunday as the star quarterback suffered an ankle injury during the Super Bowl champions' 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Mahomes was left limping after being hit by several Browns defenders midway through the fourth quarter, and he received help on his way off the field as Carson Wentz saw the play off at quarterback.
“I was trying to make the play happen,” Mahomes said. “When I threw the ball, I got hit, and I didn't see it, it felt like someone hit me from behind too, so I kind of flipped over.
“It kind of happens in football. Try to recover but obviously it hurts a little bit. Now we will finish the rehab part of it and try to be ready for next week.
“Usually the next day is when you get it right. I feel I could have finished the game in different circumstances. But I thought the smart decision was made with Carson. He played a lot of football, he finished the game.” Game well.”
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday night that an ankle X-ray came back negative, with Mahomes now considered week-to-week.
“Patrick, his right ankle is hurt. It's not broken, but it's sore,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He'll start the rehab part as we go forward, and then we'll just have to see how he goes down the road here.”
Mahomes finished the game 19 of 38 for 159 yards and two touchdowns to Noah Gray and JuJu Smith-Schuster as the Chiefs improved to 13-1.
The defending champions are scheduled to face the Houston Texans in Arrowhead next weekend before visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
