Harlequins ended their three-match winless run in the Gallagher Premiership with a 38-14 win over Newcastle at Kingston Park.

James Chisholm's converted effort gave Queens an early lead and the game developed into a tight contest, with Adam Rizwan equalizing seven minutes before half-time, but Marcus Smith crossed to restore his side's lead.

Smith extended the visitors' lead from the tee – early in the second half – and Ben Redshaw scored a second try to put Newcastle seemingly close.

However, three tries in the last ten minutes from Jack Walker, Oscar Baird and Sam Riley ensured Harlequins' fourth Premiership win of the season, while an eighth league loss saw the Falcons remain bottom of the table.

How the game unfolded

Although Newcastle managed some early pressure, Harlequins scored in the 10th minute when Chisholm collected the ball from the corner and cut into a gap in the Falcons' defense on the ground under the posts, and Smith added the conversion.

The visitors were forced to make an early substitution after seven minutes when Rodrigo Isgro limped off the field and was replaced by Jarrod Evans.

Just moments after taking to the pitch, Ernie Herbst was sent to the sin box for a challenge on Richard Palverman and Newcastle's promising strike was stopped by their opponents.

Harlequins' defense was tested again as the Falcons increased the pressure on the try-line for the visitors, but a quick shift in play to the right allowed Rizwan to run in and land in the 33rd minute before Brett Connon equalized from the tee.

Harlequins quickly regained their lead before half-time after a brilliant driving strike got them into a dangerous position in the right corner and Evans fired a superb pass over the top of the Newcastle defense to Smith, who raced into space to cross before converting his own effort.

The fly-half extended Queen's lead six minutes after half-time from the penalty spot.

Newcastle built up the phases well and found their second attempt of the night in bizarre fashion when a quick switch of play reached Ben Stephenson on the right.

The winger kicked the ball forward, but it bounced off the corner flag and into the path of Redshaw, who quickly hit the ground inside the lines and Conon converted.

Quins responded immediately just minutes later from the goal line with a powerful strike and Walker broke away to cross with Smith adding the extras.

The brutal display continued in the final stages when Newcastle's kick was awarded and play turned to Bird on the ground before Reilly crossed with seconds left on the clock, Smith converting both.
