A top adviser to New York City Mayor Eric Adams resigned abruptly Sunday amid a federal investigation into a corruption and bribery indictment against Adams.
Councilor Ingrid Lewis Martin's phones were confiscated and her home was searched as part of the investigation. She issued a lengthy statement regarding her departure alongside with Adams on Sunday, saying she plans to spend more time with her family.
“To my political partner, brother, and friend, Mayor Eric Adams: Thank you for seeking me out, in 2004, and asking me to run your Senate campaign. Thank you for seeing things in me that I didn't see.” “In myself,” said Luis Martin.
“My humble gratitude to you for encouraging me to be my true self and for supporting me through some tough times. As you can tell, this has been a good journey; I will use my author's license and say this has been an amazing journey,” she added.
Adams' statement echoed his aide's friendly tone.
“Ingrid has been not only a friend, confidant and trusted advisor, but also a sister. We've always talked about when this day would come, and while we've planned it for a long time, it's still hard to know that Ingrid won't be next door every day,” Adams said.
“I and all New Yorkers owe her a debt of gratitude for her decades of service to our city. And while she spends a lot of time with her granddaughter, I know that Ingrid will remain engaged in moving our city forward from standing on the sidelines as she continues to support our administration and our city,” he added.
