Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has given a bot of Marcus Rashford, claiming he would rather put the 63-year-old goalkeeper on the bench than the striker due to effort.
Rashford was again left out of United's Matchday squad for the 1-0 win over Fulham, as the Amorim side scored through Lisandro Martinez's deflected strike – their only shot on target.
The England international has not been in United's Premier League matchday squad in nearly two months, and Amorim says Rashford does not give the attitude of someone “giving the maximum every day”.
With one week to go until the January transfer window closes, Amum said “if things don't change, I won't change” regarding Rashford's situation in the United squad.
“It's always the same reason: training, the way I see a footballer in life. It's every day, every detail,” Amumim said in his post-match press conference at Craven Hut on why Rashford was unavailable.
“If things don't change, I won't change. It's the same situation for every player, if you make the most of every player's usability.
“You can see on the bench that we're missing a little bit of speed off the bench. But I'll put (Man Utd Moving Coach Jorge) vital in front of a player who doesn't give the maximum every day.”
Later on Sunday, Rashford posted a 'well done' message on his Instagram Story, congratulating his teammates on the win.
The 63-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford alongside Amorim from Sporting CP in November, is 63 years old.
Amorim: Man UTD lacks pace and power up front, we have the issue scoring goals
Amorim's comments on Rashford came after the United boss admitted his side still have a problem scoring goals this season – and that his side lacks “pace and authority up front”.
At Craven Cottage on Sunday, United were forced to wait 42 minutes for their first shot on target – a goal through half-half Matthijs Ligt, and also failed to score from open play in the first half for a 12th consecutive Premier League match.
With Rasmus Hojlund down near the hour mark having made little impact and his replacement Joshua Zirkzee touching the ball just eight times in the remaining half-hour, Amorim admits there is room for improvement in his forward line.
Asked if scoring goals was a problem for his team, Amorim said TNT Sports: “I think so. Even in the second half, we wanted to change something, and we lack some speed and authority up front.
“But it is what it is. We need to have constructors, more chances. We struggle a lot in these details. But winning helps a lot to improve.”
Asked if he expected any additional help from the remaining week of the transfer window, Amorim replied: “We have to be careful. Even the rules are here, we have to follow the rules.
“We made (transfer) mistakes in the past, we can't do it now. We are focused on improving the team, let's see. Let's focus on the players we have and focus on the next game.”
Amorim is unsure about Garnacho's future
Amorim also remained in the future of Alejandro Garnacho, who started in the win over Fulham before running after United's winner.
Garnacho has been the subject of interest from Napoli and Chelsea, with United potentially tempted to sell the academy graduate to raise “pure profit” funds to help comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Amumim said about whether no one knows. anything could happen “.
“He's improving in every department of the game, the way they recover, understanding the game when they defend.
“I'm trying to find the best position for him, and today he played more open, not inside.
Analysis: A winning feeling – but United's problems are still clear to see
Sky Sports' Pete Smith at Craven Cottage:
Amorim stressed the importance of the result over the performance ahead of Man Uta's 1-0 win at Fulham, and his hope is that the momentum of picking up three points on the road can give his side a boost.
They certainly looked like they needed one for the majority of this match. United's warning was clear to see as they defended the numbers and looked for the safest option in their possession. It was notable before the game that Fulham had been listed as favorites – and the visitors played up to the underdog tag.
This result will not hide the problems that Amorim has to solve. He himself noted the lack of push in the final third and the question remains for both Hollande and his replacement Zirkzee.
Garnacho, a player they could well sell before the deadline, seemed likely to provide a spark amid an uninspiring attack. Fulham, despite the record of a poor attacking group, almost exposed a well-documented weakness of late.
However, with a Europa League trip to Bucharest on Thursday followed by home games against Crystal Palace and then Leicester in the FA Cup, there may be an opportunity for United to build some positive rhythm to improve their short-term prospects. The bigger picture remains a major work in progress.
