Chelsea want to sign Crystal Palace and England centre-back Mark Guehi.
The west London club are searching for a replacement for Wesley Fofana, who Enzo Maresca has confirmed could miss the rest of the season with a serious hamstring injury.
Newcastle made several attempts to sign Guehi last summer, but was unable to agree on a fee with Palace.
The 24-year-old began his career at Chelsea's Cobham academy before joining Palace in an £18m deal in the summer of 2021.
Another option being considered by Chelsea is to recall Trevo Chalupa from his loan to Palace.
When does the winter transfer window close?
The 2025 January transfer window officially ends on Monday 3 February at 11pm UK time in the Premier League.
The window for most major European leagues – including France (1pm GMT), Germany, Scotland and Spain – also closes on Monday, February 3, although times will vary.
Meanwhile, Italian clubs only have until 7pm on Saturday 1 February to conduct their business, and the transfer window in Türkiye closes on Tuesday 11 February.
Beyond that, the window will close in Saudi Arabia on January 30.
