Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, has withdrawn her name from running for a seat in the Senate.
She resigned this month from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, raising speculation that she might replace outgoing Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, who was nominated by Trump to be secretary of state.
But in a post on X, she said she removed herself from consideration “after an incredible amount of thought, contemplation and encouragement from many.”
She said she wishes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis success in selecting a replacement to serve out the remainder of Rubio's six-year term, which expires in 2026.
“I could not have been more honored to serve as co-chair of the Republican Party during the most important election of our lives, and I am truly humbled by the incredible support for me,” Lara Trump said in her Channel X post on Saturday. “By the people of our country, right here in the great state of Florida.”
She said she has a big announcement to share in January, without providing further details.
Lara Trump was elected co-chair of the Republican Party in March, strengthening her father-in-law's influence over the party during his presidential campaign.
Along with her husband, Trump's son Eric, and his older brother Don Jr., she has emerged as one of the Republican nominee's top campaign surrogates in the run-up to the election.
