Kylian Mbappe may miss the Intercontinental Cup final due to the thigh injury he suffered during Real Madrid's win over Atalanta on Tuesday.

The French striker opened the scoring in Bergamo with a brilliant touch, but was forced off 10 minutes before the end of the first half.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated after the match that Mbappe's withdrawal was just a precautionary step.

He said: It doesn't seem serious. He has overload, a little discomfort.

“We'll have to see in the next few days. It doesn't look serious, but he had to stop, because he wasn't able to run and it was bothering him a little bit. So we preferred to change it.”

Further tests in the Spanish capital revealed an infection that the local AS daily newspaper said would take 10 days to recover.

A club statement read: “After the tests carried out on Kylian Mbappé today by Real Madrid’s medical department, the player was diagnosed with a groin injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored.”

This 10-day time frame will mean Mbappe will miss this weekend's match against Rayo Vallecano, and is a major doubt for his participation in the Intercontinental Cup final against Mexican side Pachuca or Egyptian side Al Ahly on December 18.

It is another setback for Mbappe, who has struggled to find his form and fitness after joining Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.
